Conference Overview
Physicians who care for patients with peripheral vascular disease face unique and complex challenges.
With the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and obesity increasing among an already aging population,
the sheer number of patients who present for evaluation and management seems overwhelming.
These patients often present with multisystem manifestations of vascular disease, the severity of which
can be quite intense. Practicing clinicians must remain educated on new modalities for the evaluation
and management of all vascular diseases. Education comes in many different forms: from reading
medical literature in print or electronically; to participating in Web-based symposia; to local, regional,
and national conferences; to live-demonstration courses. Despite the convenience of Web-based
seminars, human interaction between participants and experts in an intimate, yet comprehensive venue,
providing unique educational tools is still the basis for superior continuing medical education.
Vascular InterVentional Advances, VIVA™, has defined excellence in professional education in the field
of vascular medicine and intervention. What has made VIVA™ the vascular course has been a desire to
teach…not just offer “show and tell.” VIVA™ 2009 will build on prior achievements by expanding the
integration of all specialties involved in the care of patients with vascular disease: vascular surgery,
interventional cardiology, vascular medicine, interventional radiology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, and
cardiothoracic surgery. A nationally recognized group of experts will engage attendees in discussions of
the hottest topics spanning the field of vascular medicine and intervention. Our faculty will critically review
current practice patterns, explore evolution of the field, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of
key publications. In 2008, VIVA™ continued with VIVA™ Dialogs, intimate sessions with a limited number
of participants, dissecting specific topics in greater detail than can be covered during any large symposium;
and, introduced VIVA™ Chalk Talks, parallel sessions specifically evaluating technical components
of vascular therapy with limited faculty and attendees. VIVA™ 2009 will expand the access to these
intimate discussions with faculty. As a significant percentage of attendees are now busy operators,
VIVA™ 2009 will introduce “Extreme VIVA™.” These rapid-fire case presentations will show the completion of
very complex cases as an introduction to the different VIVA™ general sessions. The course directors feel
that this, along with an expanded debate series, will make VIVA™ 2009 an unparalleled educational
experience for the attendees.

And, for the first time, VIVA™ has designed a session for allied health
professionals (including nurses, vascular clinic staff, endovascular operating room staff, cath lab and angio
suite staff, nurse practitioners, vascular technologists and physician assistants) interested in the management
of patients with vascular disease.
